Bluff Point circuit: Capricorn Coast National Park guide

The Bluff Point circuit climbs over a coastal headland at the southern end of Kemp Beach, south of Yeppoon. It is a short walk, but the steep opening climb, stairs, and exposed sections make it more involved than a level beach path.

The circuit suits walkers who want a compact Grade 3 outing with coastal and island views. Turtle Lookout and Ritamada Outlook face across Keppel Bay, while the inland side passes through open grassland and dry rainforest.

What to expect

From the Kemp Beach picnic area, the route climbs steeply for about 600 m to Turtle Lookout. The lookout faces the Keppel Bay islands and the water below the headland. Marine animals may be visible when conditions suit, but sightings are never guaranteed.

The track continues a short distance to Ritamada Outlook for another coastal view. From there, keep following the circuit through exposed grassland with glimpses inland, then into denser dry rainforest before returning to the start. This change in vegetation gives the return side a different feel from the climb.

Bluff Point is part of Capricorn Coast National Park on Darumbal Country. Keep to the formed track and follow QPWS signs around the lookouts.

• Stay behind lookout barriers and back from unprotected cliff edges.
• The climb, steps, and natural surfaces can be slippery after rain. Wear shoes with secure grip.
• Exposed sections heat up quickly. Carry drinking water and sun protection, and avoid the hottest part of warm days.
• Mobile reception can be unreliable, so do not depend on your phone as the only way to navigate or call for help.
• Dogs are not permitted in Capricorn Coast National Park.
• Carry out all rubbish; there are no bins in the park.

Practical tips

• Park at the Kemp Beach picnic area rather than on the Scenic Highway.
• Allow the full official time if you plan to stop at both lookouts.
• A clockwise or anticlockwise circuit is possible. Use the onsite map and track signs to choose your direction.
• The stairs make the circuit unsuitable for prams, bikes, and scooters.
