Mount Cordeaux track: Main Range National Park guide

Cover Image for Mount Cordeaux track: Main Range National Park guide

The Mount Cordeaux track is a manageable return distance for many regular walkers, but the climb, mountain weather, and exposed lookout give it more bite than a flat forest stroll.

From Cunninghams Gap in Main Range National Park, the track climbs through cool subtropical rainforest onto rocky high country just below the 1,135m peak. On a clear day you get wide Scenic Rim and Darling Downs views, with Mount Mitchell on the southern skyline.

Quick route overview

  • Distance: 6.8km return
  • Time: about 2.5 hours walking time, allow longer for rests, photos, or slower groups
  • Difficulty: moderate to hard (Grade 4)
  • Terrain: formed dirt track, roots, rock steps, short stair sections, and a rocky lookout area near the end

What to expect on the walk

From the Crest car park at Cunninghams Gap, start on the short Rainforest circuit then branch onto the Mount Cordeaux track. The early section is shaded, with buttressed trees, vines, and birdlife that make the climb feel gentler than it is.

The gradient builds steadily. There are no major scrambles, but the track is rarely flat for long, and roots, leaf litter, and uneven ground mean you need to watch your feet. In cool weather it is a solid half-day climb; in warm or humid conditions it can feel much tougher.

Higher up, the forest opens. Near the top you get glimpses through the trees before the rocky lookout below Mount Cordeaux. The view opens across Mount Mitchell, Spicers Peak, the Fassifern Valley, and the broader Scenic Rim, with the Darling Downs to the west when the air is clear.

You do not reach the true summit on the standard walking track. The signed lookout just below the peak is the main objective, and for most walkers that is the right turnaround.

Safety and conditions

Check official updates before you go:

Safety points:

  • Conditions change quickly on the range. Low cloud, wind, rain, and cold can make the lookout feel very different from the car park.
  • The track is Grade 4, so do not treat it as an easy family stroll just because the distance looks moderate on paper.
  • Roots, damp leaf litter, and rock steps can be slippery, especially after rain or in heavy mist.
  • There are steep drops near the lookout. Stay behind barriers, supervise children closely, and do not edge out for photos.
  • QPWS recommends limiting groups on the Mount Cordeaux track and lookout, so larger groups should split up or choose another plan.
  • National park rules apply: dogs are not permitted.

Tips for walkers

  • Start earlier on weekends and during cool-season fine weather, when Cunninghams Gap is busy.
  • Carry more water than you expect for a 6.8km walk. The climb and altitude hide how much effort you are putting in.
  • Pack a warm layer and rain protection even if the forecast looks fine. Range weather is less forgiving than the lowlands.
  • Shoes with grip and stability help a lot on the return descent.
  • If you want a longer day, plan the nearby Bare Rock track as a deliberate extension rather than an add-on once you are already tired.
  • For broader park planning, the Main Range National Park guide PDF is useful alongside the live QPWS journey page.
  • For local walking context in southern Queensland, Toowoomba Bushwalkers Club is a solid community resource, and Wanderstories covers broader trail writing.
  • For a different south-east Queensland summit climb, see the Mount Ngungun Summit track.

Pick a clear day if you can, respect the exposed lookout, and keep expectations realistic for a Grade 4 mountain walk.
