Trail Overview
Distance: 6km return
Grade: Moderate
Duration: 3-4 hours
Surface: Natural bush track with some steep sections
Best time to visit: Early morning or late afternoon to avoid heat
What to Expect
The Blue Arrow Circuit is less crowded than the popular Red and Yellow Arrow tracks, making it perfect for those seeking a more peaceful rainforest experience. Over half of the track involves steady climbing through dense tropical vegetation, while the return journey takes you downhill on rough but well-defined terrain.
Key Features
- Lumley Hill Summit: The track climbs to over 300m altitude, reaching the summit of Lumley Hill
- Rainforest Diversity: Walk through open woodland, dense rainforest, and areas of fern understory
- Lookout Points: Multiple viewing spots offering glimpses of the coast north of Cairns
- Wildlife: Look out for Australian brush-turkeys, orange-footed scrubfowl, and various bird species
Trail Description
Starting from Collins Avenue near the Cairns Botanic Gardens, the Blue Arrow Circuit begins about halfway around the Red Arrow Circuit. The track starts with a steep 600m climb to the first lookout, which offers views of the coast and Lumley Hill ahead.
The trail then divides into a circuit that can be walked in either direction. The right branch passes through rainforest and open grassland before climbing steeply towards Lumley Hill summit. The left branch climbs through rainforest on natural stairs created by tree roots.
