The Yellow-Red Arrow Circuit joins two popular Mount Whitfield Conservation Park tracks into one outing. Expect a steady Yellow Arrow climb with harbour views, then Red Arrow rainforest lookouts and the well-known bamboo section before returning toward the Botanic Gardens precinct.

Quick route overview

  • Distance: about 5.5 km circuit
  • Grade: moderate
  • Duration: 2.5 to 3 hours
  • Elevation gain: about 280 m
  • Surface: mix of natural bush track, formed paths, and stairs
  • Best time: early morning or late afternoon

What to expect

This circuit gives a fuller Mount Whitfield sample than either track alone: open eucalyptus woodland, denser rainforest gullies, harbour and airport views, and enough climbing to feel like a solid half-day walk in humid weather.

Yellow Arrow section

From Aeroglen Drive the Yellow Arrow climbs steadily through open forest with emerging city and harbour views. The ridge junction is a good place to rest, drink, and decide whether to continue or reverse.

Red Arrow section

The Red Arrow portion includes the bamboo passage, short steep climbs to lookouts, and a shaded rainforest return. Expect more shared traffic here, especially near Collins Avenue access points.

Safety and preparation

  • Carry at least 1.5 litres of water per person
  • Wear sturdy shoes with grip
  • Use insect repellent in warmer months
  • Start early to avoid afternoon heat
  • Slow down on wet stairs and roots
