The Yellow Arrow Track is a popular climb in Mount Whitfield Conservation Park and a clear introduction to Cairns urban bushwalking. This moderate ascent up the flanks of Lumley Hill opens harbour views and connects into longer Arrow options if you still have energy.

Quick route overview

  • Distance: about 1.9 km one way (roughly 3.8 km return)
  • Grade: moderate
  • Duration: 1 to 1.5 hours return for most walkers
  • Elevation gain: about 150 m
  • Surface: well-formed track with some steep sections and stairs
  • Best time: early morning or late afternoon
  • Access: Aeroglen Drive, Aeroglen

What to expect

Yellow Arrow sits between an easy foothill stroll and a full Blue Arrow day. Locals and visitors use it for elevated views over Cairns Harbour and Trinity Inlet without a long commitment.

On clear days you can look across Trinity Inlet toward the Coral Sea, with Green Island visible on the horizon. The ridge junction also links into Blue Arrow and other Mount Whitfield connections, so you can extend or turn around based on heat and fitness.

Climb notes

The track climbs steadily through open eucalyptus forest. Early sections are well formed with good footing. Mid sections steepen with natural rock steps and occasional switchbacks. Near the ridge, constructed stairs appear on steeper pitches and harbour views open progressively.

Trail running and training use

At about 1.9 km one way, Yellow Arrow suits hill repeats and short training sessions. Coverage near residential areas is usually good, but still carry water and treat heat carefully. Yield to walkers on narrow sections.

Wildlife and environment

Expect open-forest habitat typical of the Whitfield Range: brush-turkeys, honeyeaters, lorikeets, and seasonal flowering trees. Stay on formed track to protect understorey and reduce erosion.

Safety and preparation

  • Carry at least 1 litre of water (more in hot weather)
  • Wear shoes with grip for wet descents
  • Start early in summer months
  • Check council notices for temporary closures or upgrades on the Arrow network
