Nandroya Falls Circuit: Wooroonooran National Park walk guide

Nandroya Falls Circuit is a rainforest loop from the Henrietta Creek day-use area in Wooroonooran National Park, inland from Innisfail. It is a sensible choice for walkers comfortable with a few hours on uneven, often wet ground, rather than a quick roadside stop. What to expect

The circuit runs beneath tall Wet Tropics rainforest, following creeks and passing smaller cascades before reaching Nandroya Falls. The route is shaded for much of the way, but that shade also keeps roots, rocks and timber surfaces damp. Take your time on the steeper or slippery sections rather than trying to maintain a road-walking pace.

The loop gives more of a forest walk than a lookout walk. Water levels, flow and the character of the creek crossings vary with recent rain, so don't assume that photographs or old track reports describe the day you arrive.

Safety and conditions

• Do not cross a creek that is flooded, fast-moving or carrying debris. Heavy rain can raise water levels quickly in this part of the Wet Tropics.
• Wear shoes with reliable grip. Wet roots, rock and leaf litter are common under the rainforest canopy.
• Carry drinking water, insect protection and a rain layer. Mobile reception may be limited away from the road.
• Keep clear of creek edges and waterfalls, particularly after rain. Smooth rock can be far more slippery than it looks.
• Dogs and other domestic animals are not permitted in Queensland national parks. Give cassowaries space if you encounter one, and never feed wildlife.

Practical tips

Henrietta Creek is reached from the Palmerston Highway, west of Innisfail. Use the signed day-use area as the start, and allow extra driving time in wet weather. Toilets and picnic facilities may be available in the day-use area, but check the current QPWS information rather than relying on a previous visit.

Walk the circuit early if rain is forecast later in the day, and leave enough daylight for a slower return over wet ground. This is a day walk, so pack out all rubbish and stay on the formed track to protect the rainforest floor.
